Ruth Padel (* 1946 in London ) is a British poet and classical philologist. In 2009 she became the first woman in the approximately 300-year history of the Oxford Professor of Poetry , but resigned a few days after her election under public pressure.

Life

Padel is a descendant of the naturalist Charles Darwin . She studied Greek at Oxford , where she also received her PhD . From 1974 to 1984 she taught at Oxford and in the meantime also at Birkbeck College and Princeton . In 1984 she interrupted her academic career, married the philosophy professor Myles Burnyeat and devoted herself to writing poetry. A first short collection was published in 1985, and Padel became the mother of a daughter that year. In 1990, Summer Snow was the first full-fledged book of Padel's poems to be published. This was followed by several other volumes of poetry and some non-fiction books.

On May 16, 2009 she was elected Oxford Professor of Poetry . The favorite in the election was originally Derek Walcott , who had given up his candidacy after he was accused of sexual harassment in letters anonymously sent to over 100 Oxford professors . Nine days after her election, Padel resigned on allegations of participating in the smear campaign by providing information to journalists.

In 2016, Padel was appointed to the jury of the newly restructured Man Booker International Prize .
