Myles Frederic Burnyeat

Myles Frederic Burnyeat CBE FBA ( January 1, 1939 - September 20, 2019 ) was a British philosopher and historian of philosophy . He was one of the world's leading specialists in the field of ancient philosophy .

Life

After attending Bryanston School in Blandford Forum , Dorset , and the National Service in the Royal Navy , Burnyeat earned a BA in Philosophy from King's College , Cambridge . He continued his studies in philosophy with Bernard Williams at University College London . In 1964 he became Assistant Lecturer in Philosophy there, and in 1965 Lecturer. In 1978 he found employment as a Lecturer in Classics at Cambridge University and as a College Lecturer in Philosophy. At the same time he was a fellow of the newly founded Robinson College until 1996 . From 1984 to 1996 he was the fifth Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy at Cambridge University. He then went to All Souls College , Oxford as a Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy , and returned to Robinson College in 2006. Guest professorships and lectures have taken him to numerous universities, including Harvard University , Cornell University , Princeton University and the University of Chicago .

From 1984 to 2000 he was married to the classical philologist and poet Ruth Padel . From winter 2002 until her death on March 12, 2003, he was married to Heda Segvic , a Croatian historian of philosophy in the field of ancient philosophy. Your essays were edited posthumously by him. Awards

In 1984 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy and in 1992 a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He is also a member of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Institut International de Philosophie . From 2005 to 2006 he was President of the Aristotelian Society . In 2007 he was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his achievements . In 2012 he was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of St Andrews .
