Jonathan Barnes
Jonathan Barnes FBA (* 1942 in Much Wenlock , Shropshire ) is a British philosopher and historian of philosophy with an analytical orientation and one of the leading specialists in ancient philosophy .
Life
Barnes attended the City of London School and Balliol College , Oxford . He then taught at Oxford for 26 years, first from 1968 to 1978 as a fellow at Oriel College , then as a fellow at Balliol College. From 1995 he taught as a professor of philosophy at the University of Geneva and since 2003 at the Université de Paris-Sorbonne . He retired in 2006 and has since lived in Ceaulmont , Département Indre , a small community in central France.
In 1991, together with a large number of well-known colleagues, he campaigned for the Palestinian philosopher Sari Nusseibeh, who was arrested by the Israeli authorities without giving a charge .
Jonathan Barnes is the older brother of the British novelist Julian Barnes and appears with his family in an autobiographical essay by his brother on death.
Barnes has been a Fellow of the British Academy since 1987 and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1999 .
Research priorities
Barnes is a specialist in Greek philosophy , especially in ancient logic , and is considered one of the leading interpreters of Aristotle , whose thinking he examines from and from an analytical perspective. In addition, he has translated into English fragments of the pre-Socratics , various writings by Aristotle, Sextus Empiricus , Alexander von Aphrodisias and Porphyrios .
