Julia Annas

Julia Elizabeth Annas (born June 13, 1946 ) is an American philosopher and historian of philosophy .

Life

After studying philosophy at Oxford University and Harvard University , Annas received a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1972. PhD . She then was a Fellow and Tutor at St. Hugh's College , Oxford for fifteen years . Apart from a year at Columbia University (1991–1992), she has since been Regents Professor of Philosophy at the University of Arizona . In addition, she has held a number of visiting professorships in the USA and Europe. Annas is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a co-founder and advisory board member of the annual Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy and co-editor of the Oxford Aristotle Studies series . She has been an elected member of the American Philosophical Society since 2013 . She is an external member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences .

Annas works on all aspects of ancient Greek philosophy , especially ethics , psychology and epistemology . Among the authors, she paid special attention to Plato , Aristotle , Sextus Empiricus and the ancient skeptics, as well as Cicero .
