Copernicia baileyana is a species of palm endemic to Cuba . The species epithet honors the palm explorer Liberty Hyde Bailey .

features

The trunk becomes up to 18 m high, rarely more than 12 m in cultivation. The diameter is around 60 cm. The trunk is usually the same thickness from about 30 cm high, rarely has a swelling in the middle. The trunk is smooth and light gray to pure white. A few dead leaves hang below the crown . The leaf crown is round and 4.5 to 6 m high and wide. The fan-shaped leaves are 1.5 m wide and almost circular. They have many stiff, narrowly lanceolate segments that are incised to a third of the leaf diameter. The petiole is 1.2 m long and extends into the leaf blade, which is costapalmatically. The leaf blade is light to dark green on the upper side, light gray green on the underside and covered by a layer of wax.

The inflorescence is heavily branched and around 2 m long. It bends down from the center of the leaf crown. The flowers are whitish. The fruits are round, brown to black and less than 2.5 cm in diameter.

The species grows in the savannahs and open forests in Cuba .
