Michael Frede

Michael Johannes Frede (born May 31, 1940 in Berlin , † August 11, 2007 in Agios Minas near Itea , Greece ) was a German philosopher who dealt in particular with ancient philosophy .

Life

He completed his philosophy studies in Göttingen in 1966 with a doctorate to become a Dr. phil. and held an assistant position there until 1971. In 1972 he completed his habilitation with the thesis »The stoic logic«. In 1968/69 he was a visiting lecturer in Berkeley , California , where he accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Philosophy Department in 1971 and was soon appointed full professor. In 1976 he moved to Princeton , New Jersey, and in 1991 to Oxford , where he taught the history of philosophy until his retirement in 2005. In 1997/98 he returned to Berkeley for a guest semester as the 84th Sather Professor of Classical Literature. After his retirement he taught at the University of Athens .

In 1966 Michael Frede married the philosopher Dorothea Aline Nicolai, who as Dorothea Frede has made a well-known, good name for herself , especially in ancient philosophy. The Fredes have two children together.

While attending a colloquium in Delphi , Michael Frede drowned on August 11, 2007 while bathing in the Gulf of Corinth . He was buried in Athens on August 14th .

Frede was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen , the British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
