Dorothea Frede

Dorothea Aline Frede , née von Nicolai (born July 5, 1941 in Vienna ) is a German philosopher and until her retirement she held the chair for the history of philosophy at the University of Hamburg . Her focus is on ancient philosophy ( pre-Socratics , Plato , Aristotle , Hellenism ) and medieval philosophy. Other main areas of work are phenomenology and hermeneutics .

After studying German, musicology, classical philology and philosophy in Hamburg and Göttingen, she received her doctorate with Günther Patzig at the University of Göttingen with a thesis on Aristotle and then worked for almost twenty years at various universities in the USA before she was appointed in 1991 accepted a professorship in Hamburg. After her retirement in August 2006, she taught again for five years in the USA as Mills Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley .

Since 2001 she has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and a Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 2004 to 2007 she was chairwoman of the GANPH (Society for Ancient Philosophy eV) based in Munich. Her list of publications includes several monographs, numerous contributions to edited volumes, journal articles and book reviews. She is internationally recognized as an authority in the field of ancient philosophy.

In 1966 she married Michael Frede and they have two children.
