Charles James Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie (born June 3, 1802 , † May 22, 1844 in London ) was a British officer and politician who was once elected as a member of the House of Commons .

Charles Stuart-Wortley came from an old branch of the House of Stuart . He was born the second son of James Stuart-Wortley and his wife Elizabeth Creighton, a daughter of John Creighton, 1st Earl Erne . He attended Harrow School from 1812 . In 1819 he joined the regiment of the 10th Dragoons as a cornet . By 1826 he reached the rank of captain, but from 1829 received only half pay . His father had been raised to Baron Wharncliffe in 1826 and had added his family name to "Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie". In the general election in 1830, Charles was elected to the House of Commons instead of his older brother John as a member of the Rotten borough Bossiney . His brother had run for the Scottish constituency of Perth Burghs . Charles only attended parliamentary sessions for a short time, as he resigned his mandate in February 1831 after his brother's election had been declared invalid. In the election that followed, his brother was re-elected for Bossiney. Charles considered running as a candidate for Milborne Port in the next election but decided not to do so due to the strong position of Philip Crampton , Lord Anglesey's candidate .

He married Emmeline Charlotte Elizabeth Manners on February 17, 1831 , daughter of John Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland . His wife had previously been courted by Prince Leopold von Sachsen-Coburg and later became known as a writer. Charles became one of the prince's confidants and accompanied him to Belgium in 1832, where he was present at the French siege of Antwerp in December. He took letters from the British Foreign Minister Lord Palmerston to Robert Adair , the British envoy in Brussels, and to the British military observer Colonel John Cradock without an official mandate .

He died of the long-term effects of a riding accident. He and his wife had the following children:

  • Archibald Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie (1832–1890) ⚭ Lavinia Rebecca Gibbins
  • Adelbert William John Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie († 1847)
  • Victoria Alexandrina Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie (1837–1912) ⚭ Sir William Earle Welby-Gregory, 4th Baronet
