Charles T. Hinde

Charles T. Hinde (born July 12, 1832 in Urbana , Ohio ; † March 10, 1915 Coronado , California ) was an American tycoon , inventor and philanthropist who invested in many companies, including the shipping and railroad industries.

Life

Hinde attended school in Mount Carmel , Illinois . He visited in Greencastle , the DePauw University , however, the study broke off, he is why after several smaller works on a steamship worked. In the meantime he fell ill with cholera . After his recovery, however, he made rapid progress, only becoming a captain in his mid- twenties and then owner of a shipping company. He sold the company again and moved his family to Evansville . From now on he was interested in the railway, but his company went bankrupt. He moved to Coronado, California, and invested in several companies, including co-founder of the Hotel del Coronado . He became very wealthy and endorsed many charities towards the end of his life . At the urging of his nephew Harry Hinde, he became a member of the Republican Party . Charles T. Hinde died at the age of 82 and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego .

Hinde was one of six children of Methodist preacher Thomas S. Hinde and his wife Sara Cavileer Hinde. Charles T. Hinde was married to Eliza Halliday, the result of which was Camilla Hinde, who died at the age of 13.
