Charles Wetherbee

Charles Wetherbee (* 1966 in Buffalo , NY) is an American violinist and music teacher.

Wetherbee had his first violin training with Katherine Hafner , Bernard Mandelkern and Tom Halpin and then studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Aaron Rosand . Other teachers were Sylvia Rosenberg , Karen Tuttle and Felix Galimir . He has taught at American University , Capital University , Ohio Wesleyan University , The Ohio State University , where he started a new violin course in folk and improvisational music , and eventually became professor of violin at the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder .

Wetherbee made his first appearance at the age of six and made his debut with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under Semyon Bychkov . His first job as an orchestral musician, which he held for five years, was that of section leader of the second violins with the National Symphony Orchestra . After that he was concertmaster of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra for 16 years . He has also performed with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra , the Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia , the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogota , the National Repertory Orchestra and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Mexico .

Wetherbee is also artistic director of the Dercum Center for Arts and Humanities and founding member of the piano trio Opus 3 . He has recorded several CDs with the Carpe Diem String Quartet , of which he is first violinist, including with guitarist Willy Porter and mandolinist Jeff Midkiff . He also made several recordings with pianist David Korevaar . In the field of new music he gave the world premieres of Jonathan Lesnoff's violin concerto and his double concerto for violin and viola . In 2007 he gave the Russian premiere of John Corigliano's Violin Concerto in Saint Petersburg .
