Charles William Mitchell (* 1854 ; † 1903 ) was an English painter from Newcastle .

Mitchell belonged to the Pre-Raphaelite group . He was a contemporary of John William Waterhouse , who worked similarly to Mitchell. In the 1880s Mitchell painted several large history paintings and designed mosaics for churches.

His work Hypatia (1885), which was inspired by the novel Hypatia (1853) by Charles Kingsley and depicts the death of Hypatias of Alexandria , is particularly well known . The painting is in the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle.
