Charles Kingsley
Charles Kingsley (born July 12, 1819 in Holne , Devon , † January 23, 1875 in Eversley , Hampshire ) was an English Anglican clergyman , theologian and writer. He was one of the formative figures of so-called " Christian Socialism ".
Life
Charles Kingsley was the son of the eponymous clergyman Charles Kingsley (1782-1860). Initially he was homeschooled and then studied under Derwent Coleridge (1800-1883) at the Helston Grammar School. From 1836 he attended King's College London and in 1838 moved to Magdalene College in Cambridge , where he graduated as a Baccalaureus Artium (BA) in 1842 .
Kingsley was Canon of Eversley from July 1842 to May 1844 . From May 1844 until the end of his life he was the Reverend of the congregation. In 1844 he married. From 1848 to 1849 he taught as a professor of English literature at Queen's College in London, but had to give up the position due to health problems.
From July 12, 1859, Kingsley was in the service of Queen Victoria as chaplain and, from February 16, 1860, also in the service of Prince Consort Albert . On June 25, 1860, Kingsley was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University. He carried out this activity until 1869. Kingsley was named canon of Chester in 1869 and canon of Westminster Abbey on April 4, 1873 . In 1874 Kingsley visited the United States , where he lectured in several cities.
His scientific interests were reflected, among other things, in his membership in the Linnean Society of London (1858) and the Geological Society of London (1863).
His niece was the explorer and ethnologist Mary Kingsley .
Act
His best-known work today is likely to be his great classic children's book “ Die Wasserkinder ” ( The Water Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby ). It is a fantastic children's book that deals with both religious and social issues in a humorous way. The fact that it contains the beginnings of a purgatory is extremely interesting for a theologian who clearly saw himself as a Protestant and the Roman Church e.g. T. violently attacked. After his work Westward Ho! became the place Westward Ho! named.
The Kingsley area included both Frederick Denison Maurice and George MacDonald , who also appeared as a Christian fantasy writer.
Kingsley, after initial contact with the Oxford Movement , became extremely critical of anything that appeared to be close to Catholicism. He attacked John Henry Newman so hard that he was finally forced to write his "Apologia pro Vita Sua".
