Charles William Wallace (born February 6, 1865 in Hopkins (Missouri) , † August 7, 1932 ) was an American scholar and researcher, known for his discoveries in the field of Elizabethan theater . He was supported in his research by his wife Hulda.

Life

Wallace was born in to Thomas Dickay Wallace and Olive McEwen. He studied at Western Normal College in Shenandoah, Iowa and worked as a teacher for some time before returning to his college as a professor of Latin and English. In 1893 he married Hulda Alfreda Berggren. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1898 , where he became an instructor in 1901 and a professor of English dramatic literature in 1912. He had been on leave from the university since 1909 and only returned briefly once in 1917/18. In order to gain new funds for further research, Wallace worked successfully as a wildcatter (oil prospector) in Texas from 1918 . He died of cancer in 1932 before any new publications could be made.

research

Between 1904 and 1916, the Wallace couple researched in the Public Record Office in London for contemporary documents in which William Shakespeare is mentioned. They discovered files relating to the Bellott v Mountjoy case from 1612, in which Shakespeare testified and also signed this testimony; Shakespeare had rented a place from Mountjoy eight years earlier. Shakespeare's signature on record is one of only six known today.

More court documents that made the couple locate gave new insights into the life of the Elizabethan theater , including the role of the children's theater groups ( children's companies ).
