The rose variety 'Charles de Mills' (syn. 'Bizarre Triomphante', 'Rose Bleue', 'Ardoisée', 'Maheca de Dupont', 'Violette Bronzée', 'Charles Mills', 'Charles Wills', ' Rosa gallica atropurpurea ') ) is a single-flowering, crimson red vinegar rose ( Gallica rose ), which is considered the most perfect old garden rose . The rose, which blooms from June, is characterized by flat, quartered flower cups. The rose, which was probably bred in the Netherlands before 1700 , was first referred to in a catalog as 'Charles de Mills' in 1845. Even today it is disputed in the literature whether all synonyms are the rose variety 'Charles de Mills'. The 'Bizarre Triomphante', now known as a synonym, is possibly the original name of this rose variety.

Buds of the rose 'Charles de Mills'

The squat, bushy, upright rose 'Charles de Mills' forms a compact, strong shrub with long, curved, slightly overhanging shoots. The rose plant is about 100 cm to a maximum of 180 cm high and about 120 cm to 150 cm high and wide. The individually, sometimes arranged in clusters, crimson to purple colored flowers from about 26 to 40 velvet-like petals form a flat, bowl-shaped to pillow-shaped blossom. The petals are geometrically quartered. The flowers have a narrow white border and are often dotted with scarlet red. The rose is characterized by a delicate scent of old roses . The large, double flowers can be 8 cm to 10 cm in size. The rose has medium to dark green, robust leaves.

The 'Charles de Mills' also thrives in partial shade and is resistant to most rose diseases. The plant is only susceptible to powdery mildew .

The rose, which blooms in early to midsummer, is hardy ( USDA climate zone 4 to 9). The rose is suitable for planting low flower beds and cottage gardens .

The rose variety is found in many rosaries and gardens around the world, including the New York Botanical Garden , San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, Parc de la Tête d'Or , Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew) , Alnwick Garden , and Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe as well as in the Europa-Rosarium Sangerhausen .

Naming

The naming of the rose is controversial in literature. According to some authors, the name goes back to Charles Mills, President of the British East India Company , who was in office from 1785 to 1815 . Other sources trace the name back to the British Charles Mills, who in the middle of the 19th century laid out a rose garden with numerous pergolas , which was famous at the time in the garden of a Roman villa .
