Charles de Visch O.Cist. (* August 15, 1596 in Veurne ; † April 11, 1666 in Bruges ) was a Cistercian monk and historian .

Charles de Visch

Visch studied from 1621 to 1625 at the University of Douai and then taught for two years in the German Cistercian Abbey of Eberbach . He was not particularly qualified through scientific work, but published the first edition of his Bibliotheca scriptorum sacri ordinis Cisterciensis in 1649 , the second edition of which appeared in 1656. In general, he used second-hand information in this work; since he did not have the scriptures, errors occurred more frequently. Nevertheless, his work served many other researchers - no other of the same size existed - until the 20th century. In 1665 he compiled another list of authors of the religious order, which only appeared in the Cistercian Chronicle in 1926 . de Visch was Prior of Dunes in Belgium from 1649 to 1661.
