action
After Charlie Brown and his friends lose the first game of the new baseball season yet again, Charlie seeks help at Lucy's psychiatric booth. But she can't help Charlie either, on the contrary: She manages to make Charlie even sadder. The next morning, Lucy tells that the school is having a spelling competition. She jokes Charlie's possible participation. Linus thinks the idea is good, but Lucy, Patty and Violet laugh at Charlie Brown. Charlie, however, decides to take part and knocks out all the children in his class. Linus and Charlie practice at home for the school elimination the next day and sing a song about spelling rules with Snoopy. The next morning Charlie is terribly excited, but with Snoopy's help he wins the school elimination. Lucy thinks Charlie Brown could use an agent and suggests himself as the best solution.
Charlie goes to New York to take part in a major national spelling competition. Linus wishes him luck and gives him his comfort blanket , whereupon Linus suffers severe withdrawal symptoms at home. He decides to go to New York with Snoopy and get the comforter. Once at Charlie's hotel, Charlie has to admit that he doesn't know where the blanket could be. He suspects he might have left it in the New York Public Library . Linus and Snoopy make their way there, but stand in front of closed doors. Linus and Snoopy go back to the hotel, where Charlie is getting dressed for the competition. Linus, who is still plagued by severe withdrawal symptoms, is horrified to discover that Charlie Brown is polishing his shoes with his comfort blanket. Linus throws himself on his comforter and is happy again. Then Snoopy, Linus and Charlie set off. At home, Sally, Lucy and the other children sit in front of the television, where the competition is broadcast live. One at a time, participants drop out until there are only Charlie and one other boy left. Then ask Charlie to spell the word beagle . He spelled BEAGEL and dropped out. When Charlie, Linus and Snoopy come home, it is already dark. Nobody is there to greet them.
The next afternoon, Linus plans to visit Charlie Brown. His sister Sally tells Linus that Charlie has been lying in his bed in the dark all day. Linus goes to the devastated Charlie and talks to him. He says that Charlie made it to second place and shouldn't be ashamed of himself. After Linus has left and Charlie has thought about his words, he gets up and gets dressed. He goes outside where the other children are waiting for him.

Reviews
"A lovable film for young and old that sarcastically criticizes the values of adults."
