Charlie Smith
Charles Smith (born April 15, 1927 in New York City , † January 15, 1966 in New Haven (Connecticut) ) was an American jazz drummer of swing and modern jazz .
Charlie Smith became a professional musician in 1947, accompanied Ella Fitzgerald with Hank Jones and Ray Brown in 1948 , played with Erroll Garner (1949), Benny Goodman , Slam Stewart , Duke Ellington , Oscar Pettiford and Charles Mingus (1952) , among others . On the only television recording with Charlie Parker on the occasion of the awarding of the Down Beat Poll in 1952, he was on the drums. He then worked for Billy Taylor (1952–54), Henri Renaud (1954), Aaron Bell (1954–56), Herbie Mann (1957) and Wild Bill Davison (1959). In the 1960s, Smith joined the trio of Dwike Mitchell and Willie Ruff . He also gave lessons and devoted himself to composing.
