Charlotte Wilhelmine Christiane Marie of Hessen-Darmstadt (born November 5, 1755 in Darmstadt , † December 12, 1785 in Hanover ) was duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz by marriage .

Life

Charlotte was a daughter of Prince Georg Wilhelm von Hessen-Darmstadt (1722–1782) from his marriage to Luise (1729–1818), daughter of Count Christian Karl Reinhard von Leiningen-Dagsburg .

At first the princess was betrothed to the Hereditary Prince Peter Friedrich Wilhelm von Oldenburg , but the engagement was dissolved again due to the onset of Peter's mental illness.

On September 28, 1784, Charlotte married the later reigning Duke Karl II of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in Darmstadt . This had previously been married to Charlotte's older sister Friederike , for whose five surviving children she became the stepmother.

The couple lived in Hanover , where Karl was King George's governor . Charlotte died after giving birth to her only child a year after they got married. Karl then gave up his job in Hanover and moved to Charlotte's mother in Darmstadt, to whom he gave the children in care.

Together with her husband and his first wife, Charlotte found her final resting place in the Princely Crypt in Mirow .
