Charly (orangutan)

Charly (* probably 1957 in Sumatra ; † October 15, 2014 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Sumatran orangutan ( Pongo abelii ) who lived in Frankfurt Zoo from 1978 until his death .

Charly was one of the last orangutans to be caught in the wild in a German zoo. He was believed to be born in the wild in 1957. In 1962 it was caught in Sumatra and first brought to the Stuttgart Zoo . In 1978 Charly came to Frankfurt am Main and has since been one of the most famous animals in the great ape enclosure. Over the years of his imprisonment, he fathered a total of 19 offspring in various zoos around the world.

In 2014, his health deteriorated. Due to joint pain and general signs of aging, he was finally on October 15, 2014 euthanized . At the time of his death, he was the oldest known orangutan in the world.
