Euthanasia
When euthanasia is defined as the killing of animals with the help of sleeping pills . It is carried out by injecting a lethal dose of a narcotic , such as that contained in drugs specifically approved for this purpose.

The most common reason for euthanasia is an incurable disease of the animal. In addition, the euthanasia of dangerous animals, especially dogs , can be ordered by police and regulatory authorities to avert danger . Veterinarians have the necessary knowledge and skills to euthanize pets . The killing of animals is regulated in Section 4 of the German Animal Welfare Act:
"A vertebrate may only be killed under anesthesia or otherwise, as far as this is reasonable under the circumstances, only while avoiding pain. [...] Only those who have the necessary knowledge and skills may kill a vertebrate. "

In veterinary medicine , pentobarbital is mostly used by injection for painless and safe euthanasia of large and small animals . The drug acts as a sleep aid in low doses , and in higher doses causes death from suffocation . The animals quickly fall into a deep sleep , which in animals of the same temperature passes quickly, painlessly and without reflexes into death through cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest . Pentobarbital must not be used in animals that are used to obtain food .
Active ingredients
Various active substances are approved for euthanizing animals in Germany :
- Pentobarbital - by intravenous or intraperitoneal injection
- Embutramide - by intravenous, intracardiac, or other injection
- Potassium chloride - by intravenous or other injection
