The Charter of Florence , also known as the Charter of Historic Gardens ( French Jardins Historiques - La Charte de Florence ; English Historic Gardens - The Florence Charter , The Florence Charter about Historic Gardens ) is an international agreement of preservationists. It was originally written in French and later translated into English and German. The paper defines principles and procedures for the conservation and restoration of garden monuments and is an internationally recognized guideline in garden monument maintenance .

The Florence Charter was drawn up by the International Scientific Committee for Historic Gardens and Cultivated Landscapes ICOMOS - IFLA in Florence in 1981 in order to take into account the specific characteristics of gardens as opposed to purely built structures in the context of monument preservation . The Florence Charter is therefore an addition to the provisions in the Venice Charter .
