The monastery in the 18th century

The Chartreuse de Meyriat is a former monastery of the Carthusian order . It was located in the commune of Vieu-d'Izenave in the Ain department . Nowadays only ruins can be found.

history

The Charterhouse was one of the first to be founded in 1116. One of the founders was Ponce de Balmey, a canon of Lyon. The two brothers de Ponce (Garnier de Balmey and Guillaume de Balmey) also support the project. The first priory was named under the name of St. Stephen and the second under the name of St. Mary.

The Charterhouse was under the protection of the bishops of Geneva , Belley and the abbots of Ambronay , Cluny and above all under that of the Archbishop of Lyon . She received privileges from local lords such as Coligny, Thoire and Villars and from the Counts of Savoy .

At the end of the 12th century, at the request of Guy d'Aoste, the Chartreuse d'Aillon in Bauges was settled from here.

The importance of the Charterhouse for the region remained until the French Revolution . In 1791 the religious communities were banned and the Charterhouse abandoned. The Charterhouse was later destroyed and looted. Today there are only a few ruins left.
