The Chastel Béroard (Latin: Castellum Beroart ; today's Arabic: Minat al-Qal'a (اشدود), in the Middle Ages: Mahuz Azdud ; Hebrew: Horbat Ashdod Yam ) is an Arab castle from the 10th century in today's Israel .

location

The castle is located on the southern edge of today's Ashdod on the sandy beach of the Mediterranean Sea.

history

According to archaeological research, the castle was built in the 10th century by the Muslims, probably the Fatimids .

It was first mentioned in documents in October 1106, when King Baldwin I of Jerusalem was staying there. Although only 15 km away from the strong Fatimid fortress of Askalon , the small castle, in contrast to the newly built crusader castles Ibelin , Blanche Garde and Gibelin, apparently played no role in containing the Fatimid sphere of influence. After the conquest of Askalon by the Crusaders in 1153, it served to secure the road from Ibelin to Askalon.

In 1169 a certain Nicolaus de Beroard is mentioned in a document among the knights of the Lord of Ramla , Hugo von Ibelin , who was probably castellan of Chastel Béroard.
