history

The windmill was built in 1797 by Benjamin Godfrey as one of the last structures of its kind in Chatham and named after him. It was used to grind grain, while other windmills in the area were also used as water pumping stations to supply the local salt pans with salt water. After a few changes of ownership, it was acquired by Zenas Nickerson in 1884 for US $ 400 (approx. $ 16,500) was sold to Nelson Floyd.

He sold it to Charles Hardy in 1913, who repaired it, but only operated it as a museum. After the windmill suffered further storms in 1924, 1927 and 1932, it was sold to Stuart Crocker in 1939, who gave it to the city of Chatham in 1954 with the condition that it be removed from his property, which was implemented the following year . After extensive renovations, it was reopened to the public in 1956 and entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. To mark the 300th anniversary of the city of Chatham, the windmill was extensively restored from 2010 to 2012.
