Chazz Witherspoon (born September 16, 1981 in Woodbury , New Jersey , USA ) is an American heavyweight boxer.

amateur

Witherspoon was an amateur for only two years. He originally planned to play basketball professionally . However, after he failed to get a contract with an NBA team, he switched to boxing.

In 2004 he finished second at the US heavyweight championships (up to 91 kg), but could not qualify for the Olympic Games because he lost to Devin Vargas . He won the "National Golden Gloves " in 2004 and won all fights early. As an amateur, he won 25 fights with six losses and one draw.

professional

He turned pro in 2004 and signed to influential Shelly Finkel . At first he was able to win all of his fights against opponents in the development. Many observers were surprised that as a professional he showed a rather average punch and mostly countered his opponents.

In July 2008 he met his strongest opponent to date, the also undefeated Mexican Chris Arreola . Chazz Witherspoon suffered two knockdowns in the third round. Arreola scored the second knockdown when the gong sounded at the end of the round, after which a second Witherspoon entered the ring. Since Witherspoon was counted due to the precipitation and the round was not officially ended despite the gong, the referee disqualified Witherspoon, as only the two boxers and the referee were allowed to be in the ring during the fight.

Others

Chazz Witherspoon is a second cousin of former world heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon . Witherspoon completed a pharmaceutical marketing degree at Saint Joseph's University , which he successfully completed in May 2005.
