Cheerios are oat ring breakfast cereals from the American company General Mills , which are mainly eaten as muesli .

The rings came on the market as CheeriOats in 1941 , but had to be renamed after a legal battle with Quaker Oats in 1945. Promoted by characters from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show and the Peanuts , it became a nationally known brand in the 1950s, these days Shawn Johnson is a promotional character.

In 2013 there was a heated argument about the "Just Checking" commercial, in which a "mixed race" child talked to his white mother about the product; some viewers believed they discovered racism in it.

In Europe, the product was marketed for a while by Cereal Partners Worldwide , a joint venture with Nestlé , with a larger proportion of sugar and often other grains, but did not establish itself in this form in mainland Europe. The British variants that are still sold are also very sweet.
