Cheerio sign

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cheerio sign is a radiological finding in computed tomography , in which the thickening of the walls of the bronchial system results in an appearance that is similar to the American breakfast cereal " Cheerios ".

Radiological representation

The radiological picture is similar to the breakfast cereal "Cheerios"

The computed tomographic representation of the lungs shows isolated, grouped or diffusely distributed circular structures with a black inner area and a thickened hyperdense border. Because of this characteristic appearance, the radiological symbol got its name from the similarity to the American breakfast cereal "Cheerios".

Clinical significance

The thickening of the walls of the airway system comes about through proliferation of the surrounding cells and can be of both benign and malignant origin. Malignant causes include both primary lung tumors such as bronchioloalveolar carcinoma and tumors outside the lung that have metastasized to the lungs. These include, for example, various adenocarcinomas , sarcomas and lymphomas . The benign causes include primarily systemic inflammatory processes such as vasculitis or Langerhans cell histiocytosis .
