Chela Weiss

Chela Weiss (* 1947 ; † July 24, 2004 in Dieppe ) was a French gypsy jazz musician ( violin , also guitar , composition ).

Weiss, who comes from a Sinti family, played with his quintet between 1975 and 1993. It first performed locally in Sarreguemines before gaining national recognition. The group included Voti Haag (double bass), Gaston Michel (accordion / piano), Gallo Weiss (solo guitar) and Anton Haag and Jean-Louis Pasquet (rhythm guitar). The band was in great demand and performed at festivals such as Nancy Jazz Pulsation , jazz events in Metz, jazz in Franche-Comté or the Folk Blues Jazz Festival in Petersbach. In 1986 their only album Maro Drom (Trinitaires Records) was created. On the initiative of Alain Antonietto, Weiss was several times a guest in Lucien Malson's jazz programs on France 3 .
