Cheng Bugao

Cheng Bugao ( Chinese  程 步 高 , Pinyin Chéng Bùgāo ; * 1893 , op. A. 1898 , 1906 , in Zhejiang Province , Chinese Empire ; † June 20, 1966 in Hong Kong ) was a Chinese film director.

Life

Cheng graduated from Zhendan University in Shanghai and wrote regularly about film for the city's daily newspapers. Without prior formal training, he made his directorial debut in 1924. In 1928 he went to the film company Mingxing of Zhang Shichuan and quickly developed into one of the leading directors of the studio where he was employed until 1937th His best-known films today include Chun can ( 春蠶  /  春蚕 , Chūncán , Spring Silkworms ) and Kuang liu ( 狂 流 , kuángliú , Wild Torrents ) and Xinjiu Shanghai ( 新舊 上 海灘  /  新旧 上 海滩 , Xīnjiù Shànghǎitān , Old and New Shanghai , 1936). Cheng's films are known for their critical analysis of social circumstances. After the war, Cheng Bugao settled in Hong Kong and made several deliberately apolitical films. From 1952 he worked there for the Great Wall Film Company. In 1962 he retired.
