Chengdu Tianfu International Airport ( Chinese 成都 天府 国际 机场 , Pinyin Chéngdū tiānfǔ guójì jīchǎng ) is an airport under construction in Chengdu, the provincial capital of the Chinese province of Sichuan . The airport will be 51 km southeast of Chengdu. Construction started in May 2016 and completion is planned for 2021. It will be the second airport in Chengdu and will operate in parallel with the current Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport .
It is named after the Tianfu New Area development zone , in which it is located like the largest free-standing building in the world, the New Century Global Center (Tianfu means land of abundance ).
