Chery Socma SA was a Uruguayan automobile manufacturer .

history

The company was founded by Chery Automobile and the Argentine group of companies Sociedades Macri . This happened either in 2006 or in early 2007.

Automobile production began in December 2007 or 2008, depending on the source. It took place in a Carrasco plant that was formerly (or still) owned by Oferol . Most of the vehicles were exported to Argentina and Brazil, and later to Venezuela. Chery Argentina sold the vehicles in Argentina .

The plant was closed for six months at the end of 2008. In later years there were also considerations to relocate the plant to Brazil (2010) due to insufficient productivity or to close it (2012) because of the import restrictions on the Argentine market.

When it was founded, around 200 people were employed, later 320 to 350.

The plant was closed in mid-2015. The main reasons for this decision were the poor economic situation in Brazil and the new import restrictions in Argentina.

Even after the factory closes, Chery models will continue to be imported into Uruguay and sold by another company.

Models

The first model produced was the Chery Tiggo . Parts of it were imported from the People's Republic of China .

The Chery Face followed in 2010 .

Initially, a production of 20,000 to 25,000 units was planned. However, the plant produced a maximum of 7,000 vehicles per year.
