Cheryl Araujo

Cheryl Ann Araujo (* 1961 , † 1986 ) was the victim of a group rape (English gang-rape.) In the United States . The crime attracted strong media coverage nationwide and was the model for the drama Accused, starring Jodie Foster , which won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her role as a rape victim .

On March 6, 1983, Cheryl Araujo, then 21 , was raped by six men on a pool table in a bar in New Bedford , Massachusetts , when she was about to buy a pack of cigarettes. The crime subsequently attracted strong media coverage and was known as "Big Dan's Rape" or "New Bedford Bar Rape" after the name of the pub. In particular, the fact that numerous guests at Big Dan's watched the rape and, instead of intervening or calling the police, applauded and cheered on the perpetrators, was heatedly discussed in public. After the trial and the conviction of four defendants, Araujo worked as an activist for the rights of women and crime victims. On December 14, 1986, at the age of 25, she was killed in a car accident.
