The Chessable Masters was an online rapid chess tournament that ran from June 20th to July 5th, 2020. It is the third tournament on the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour . In addition to the world chess champion Magnus Carlsen , who organized the tournament in cooperation with the chess platform Chess24.com , eleven other top players took part.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , sports operations around the world largely came to a standstill; in chess, the Yekaterinburg 2020 candidates' tournament was last interrupted on March 26th. However , chess continues to be played online via chess servers , also by numerous top players. After the successful implementation of the Magnus Carlsen Invitational , the event was expanded to include three more online tournaments and then ends in the Grand Final . The tournament series is endowed with a total of $ 1,000,000 in prize money.

The tournament was broadcast free of charge on Chess24.com and commented on in 10 languages.

Prize money of $ 150,000 was awarded for the tournament, of which the winner received $ 45,000. The thinking time was 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. Draw offers before move 40 were not allowed. The tournament was initially played in the preliminary round (June 20th to June 23rd) as a double round tournament in two groups of six players, with each group playing two games against each other. The two groups played alternately on a daily basis and five rounds were played each day.

After the preliminary round, the best four players in each group qualified for the knockout round. The best player in Group A met in the quarter-finals (June 25th to June 29th) against the fourth-placed player in Group B, the second in Group A against the third in Group B, the third in Group A against the second in Group B and the fourth in group A on the first in group B. There were three mini-matches per encounter. Each mini-match consisted of four rapid games with the same time limit as in the preliminary round. In the event of a tie, two blitz games were played with a time limit of 5 minutes plus three seconds per move. If it was still a tie, an Armageddon game was played in which White had five minutes and Black four minutes. The winners of the quarter-finals played the overall winner in the same mode from June 30th to July 2nd. The winner of the game first group A against fourth group B against the winner from the game third group A against second group B and the winner of the game second group A against third group B against the winner of the game fourth group A against first group B.
