Chesters House

Chesters House is a villa near the Scottish village of Lanton in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is not to be confused with the villa Chester House in Eyemouth, also located in the Scottish Borders .

After completing his civil service in India, Thomas Elliott Ogilvie acquired the 1,800 acre property in 1786 or 1787  . He hired local architect William Elliot to build Chesters House. The work was completed in 1790. Chesters House has since been inherited within the Ogilvie family. In the 1930s it was leased to Edinburgh merchant John Kennedy and Nichols Clements .

Chesters House is in the midst of a large estate on the left bank of the Teviot about a kilometer northwest of Lanton. The villa consists of a two-story main building with flanking pavilions. The front facing southeast is designed with a triangular gable . The pavilions are connected to the main building via short passages.
