Chet Singh

Chet Singh (* 1960 in Jamaica ) is a musician, poet and professor of philosophy and politics.

Life

In his childhood and youth, Chet Singh and his family moved frequently to other countries. He has therefore lived in Guyana , Barbados , St. Kitts , St. Lucia and Fiji , among others . He has experienced a lot of poverty and inequality in the countries mentioned. These experiences have left a strong mark on him and later led him to deal intensively with the causes of social injustices.

Musical career

As a student at Trent University in Peterborough ( Ontario , Canada ), Chet Singh founded the band One Mind in the early 1980s, which took a verbal position in times of racist attacks on foreign students. With songs and poems, the band denounced social inequality and political grievances and was, according to Singh, a "pioneer of the spoken word". The band One Mind belongs to the genre of Dub Poetry .
Chet Singh is a founding member of the Dub Poets Collective and became its creative director.
As a solo artist, Chet Singh has released several albums. His music alternates between the genres of dub and reggae , and his confrontational texts deal with political and social issues.

Professional career

Chet Singh has taught at the following post-secondary educational institutions:

To this day, Chet Singh is a professor at Centennial College in Toronto.
Singh has received several awards for outstanding teaching activities, including the John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Award in 2012 and the Teaching Excellence Award (Silver) from the former Association of Canadian Community College, now known as Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan), in 2013 .

In addition, Chet Singh has acted as a human rights advisor to governments, hospitals and school authorities.
