The Chiesa di San Ippolito is a church building in Palermo .

Building history

The church in Via Porta di Carini in the Capo district is considered to be one of the oldest parish churches in Palermo, which was first mentioned in a document from 1267 ( Praesbiter S. Ippoliti grana decem ). In 1583 extensive renovations and additions were made.

facade

The broad facade was completed in 1728 based on a design by Andrea Palma . Your portal zone is flanked by a pair of pilasters . Portal and window supports end in a Rococo decor . A wave gable is located above the lintel with the head of a putto. The line of the pilasters continues in a slightly narrower design above the cornice with the egg bar decoration . In front of a semicircular window with a blown segmented gable stands the marble figure of Saint Ippolito framed by putti, above which a stucco medallion shows the Madonna.

inner space

The three-aisled interior is divided by dark marble columns, belt arches and gussets are decorated in color.

The church holds rich art treasures. For the first aisle chapel, Filippo Randazzo painted the altarpiece “Madonna of the Rosary with Saint Rosalia and Saint Dominicans”. On the altar there are two polychrome figures of Saints Cosmas and Damian from the end of the 16th century. A Sicilian nativity scene is in the last chapel. In front of the apse hangs a high quality painted crucifix from the 16th century. The main altarpiece with the "Martyrdom of Saint Ippolito" was also painted by Filippo Randazzo in 1728. The chapels of the left aisle show and altarpieces by unknown masters. The ceiling fresco “The Risen Christ” was painted by Giovanni Patricolo in the 19th century. The fresco “Madonna and Child” on the left inner wall has been preserved from the 14th century .
