Children's Book Council (United States)
The Children's Book Council ( acronym : CBC , German "Rat für Kinderbücher" ) is an association of children's book publishers in the USA founded in 1944, whose goals include promoting children's reading skills and the selection and recommendation of children's and youth literature for educational institutions. The organization is based in New York City .
History and activities
In 1919, Boy Scouts of America librarian Franklin K. Mathiews introduced Children's Book Week in the United States . Its aim was to promote good children's books and raise awareness of children's literacy. In 1944, a group of children 's book editors from various publishers founded the Association of Children's Book Editors , and Frederick Melcher , publisher's weekly editor, was responsible for Children's Book Week .
After the Association of Children's Book Editors expanded the activities of Children's Book Week and beyond, it was renamed the Children's Book Council (CBC). After the CBC assumed the functions of an interest group for children's book publishers, the association entrusted the organization of Children's Book Week to its own foundation Every Child a Reader , a 501 (c) association . The CBC is based in New York City .
The CBC publishes various recommendation lists and best lists for children's books every year. The best known of these award lists is Children's Choices , which the CBC has carried out together with the International Reading Association since 1975 . The Children's Choices jurors are 12,000 children in the United States.
