geography
The Chilkat Glacier is located 33 km north-northwest of Skagway in the Chilkoot Ranges , the northernmost section of the Boundary Ranges . Its nutrient area is at an altitude of 1700 m in Alaska. From there it flows in a north-westerly direction. The last 2 kilometers are on Canadian territory. The glacier ends at a height of around 200 m . A glacial rim lake has formed below the glacier tongue , which is the origin of the Chilkat River . The mean width of the glacier is 1.3 km.
Glacier development
The glacier tongue of the Chilkat glacier has retreated about 1 km in recent years. The surface area of the glacier edge lake has increased accordingly.
