Valentin Baus (born December 14, 1995 in Bochum ) is a German table tennis player in the Paralympic starting class WK5. He "is one of the most talented table tennis players with a handicap in Germany".

Athletic career

Valentin Baus started playing table tennis at the age of seven. Due to the inherited glass bone disease , he has been in a wheelchair since 2008 and continues to do his sport successfully. First he played for BSG Duisburg-Buchholz in the wheelchair table tennis Bundesliga, and since July 2016 for Borussia Düsseldorf . He regularly does his training in his hometown club TTG Weitmar in Bochum, where he also competes against athletes without wheelchairs and without disabilities (“pedestrians”).

In 2013 Baus finished third in both the individual and team championships. In 2014 he became world champion in Beijing ; while he beat the Norwegian world number one and Paralympics winner Tommy Urhaug in the semifinals . In 2015 he won two medals at the European Championships, gold in the team and silver in the individual.

At the Paralympics in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro Valentin building won the silver medal in singles. For winning the silver medal in Rio in 2016, he received the silver bay leaf.

At the beginning of December 2017 Baus took second place in the international ranking of the International Table Tennis Federation . In 2018 Baus and his team from Borussia Düsseldorf consisting of Thomas Schmidinger and Sandra Mikolaschek became German champions in wheelchair table tennis for the second time in a row. In 2018 he was nominated for the World Cup in Celje , Slovenia in October .

In 2019, Valentin Baus became European champion in the individual for the first time in Helsingborg and thus qualified for the Paralympics 2020 in Tokyo .

family

Valentin Baus' father, Harry Baus, also suffers from glass bone disease. He leads the advice for disabled and chronically ill students at the Ruhr University Bochum . Valentin's brother Merlin played football for FC Schalke 04 and became German A youth champions in 2012 with his team , after which he received a football scholarship in the USA .

In 2014 Valentin Baus was named “Youth Athlete of the Year” by Bochum.
