Ching Cheong

Ching Cheong ( Chinese  程 翔 , Pinyin Chéng Xiáng ; born December 3, 1949 in Chaozhou ) is a Chinese journalist for The Straits Times . He became known to the general public through his detention by China for alleged espionage.

In April 2005, Ching was arrested on charges of espionage for the Republic of China (Taiwan) - allegations that he himself denied. However, the arrest was believed to be related to research on Zhao Ziyang . Ching was sentenced to more than five years in prison, more than half of which he also served. He lost 15 kg while in detention. In February 2008, Ching was released early from custody. However, it was unclear to what extent the release was a sign of benevolence in the run-up to the Summer Olympics in Beijing .
