Chionis Island

Chionis Island is an island in the Palmer Archipelago west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located south of Awl Point on Trinity Island .

The name Snow Iceland (English for Snow Island was) among whalers common in the 1920s for this island, but was not used on maps. Since an island of the same name already existed with Snow Island in the nearby archipelago of the South Shetland Islands, the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee decided in 1960 to rename it. The new namesake is the white-faced sheathbill ( Chionis alba ), a bird common in this area.
