Chips & Technologies

Chips & Technologies was the first fabless semiconductor company, so it did not have its own manufacturing facilities. This business model was developed by the company's founder, Gordon Campbell .
The first product was an EGA -compatible graphics chip. This was followed by chipsets for PC mainboards and other graphics chips. Chips & Technologies also developed an 80386 -compatible microprocessor , the Super386 . Despite some advantages, it was not as successful and well-known as the processors from Intel , AMD and Cyrix .
Alongside IBM , Chips & Technologies was the first company to offer a VGA chip. The 82C451 opened the market, which was soon entered by other companies such as Trident Microsystems , Western Digital , Cirrus Logic , Oak Technology and others. In 1997 Chips & Technologies was taken over by Intel mainly because of the graphics division.
