Ostrov (German island ) is a district of the municipality of Tisá in the Czech Republic . It is located 13 km northwest of the city center of Děčín at 460 m above sea level in Bohemian Switzerland and belongs to the Okres Ústí nad Labem . Located in a basin on the Biela directly on the German border, it is surrounded by rocks and is a popular climbing area.

geography

To the east of Ostrov rise the rugged cliffs of the Eilander walls (Ostrovské skály). To the west, the place is bordered by the Mühlberg and the Kingdom of Heaven (Volské Kameny). In the north of the village, already in German territory, lies the Große Schaftberg with the Grenzplatte, a vantage point with a view to the south, and its neighboring mountains, the Kleine Schaftberg and the Hintere Brand.

From the south, the only road that branches off the connecting road Sněžník - Tisá leads down to Ostrov.

There was no official border crossing to the neighboring German town of Rosenthal-Bielatal from 1945 to 1992, a hiking crossing leads from Rosenthal am Eulenthor to Sněžník. The old road on the Biela, which leads up from the Schweizermühle and Ottomühle, is now popular with hikers again.

history

Eiland was created in the 15th century as one of the many hammer mills in the Bielatal. When the iron ore from Schneeberg, which was processed here, was mined, the hammer was converted into a glassworks. Maria Adelheid, Countess von Thun, had the place laid out around them in 1709. Because of its charming location, the place developed into a well-frequented summer resort in the 19th century. A hotel and several inns were built. In 1928 there was the Hotel Meder , the inns Zur Grenz , Zur Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland , Zur Mühle , Zum Bergkeller , as well as the log cabin Wolf , which had a considerable number of beds. The Tetschen district health insurance company operated a rest home in Eiland. In the center of the village, which had been part of Schneeberg since 1850, there were several ponds and an outdoor pool was built by the mill.

After the end of the Second World War, the state border was closed. New holiday guests came only sparsely and the place fell into a deep slumber. Many houses and the old bathroom fell into disrepair and were torn down. A police station, which has since been disbanded, was set up in the Gasthof Zur Grenz to prevent cross-border hikes and climbing tours. During the municipal reform of 1960, the municipality Sněžník was dissolved and Ostrov was added to Tisá.

A tourist infrastructure was only gradually built up again. A bathing beach was created by the large pond and Ostrov now has two guest houses, a hotel and a campsite with bungalows.

The place is the starting point for hikes in the charming surroundings. Destinations are Tisá with the Tyssa walls , Sněžník on the High Snow Mountain or the increasingly deserted village of Rájec with its rocky landscape.
