Chiquitania (also "Chiquitos" or "Gran Chiquitania") is a savannah region in the Santa Cruz Department in eastern Bolivia . The name " Los Chiquitos " (German: "the little ones") comes from the time of the Spanish conquistadors , with whom they alluded to the small size of the entrance doors of the huts in the region; the term "Chiquitania" has the emphasis on the last "i".

Chiquitos is the colonial name for essentially five of the six current provinces that make up the Chiquitania region. The name "Chiquitos" refers to a region, not a tribe. One of the many tribes that inhabited the Chiquitos region were the Chiquitano.

The region's climate is semi-humid, warm and tropical . The monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly over the course of the year between around 20 ° C in June / July and 27 ° C in November / December; the annual mean temperature is 24 to 25 ° C. The annual rainfall averages around 1200 mm over the long term. Three quarters of this amount fall in the wet season from September to March, while less than 40 mm of precipitation falls per month in the arid months of June, July and August.

A prominent feature of the region today are the Jesuit reductions and Franciscan settlements from the 18th century, which are scattered throughout the region. Six of these churches have survived the centuries. They were extensively renovated and in 1990 UNESCO recognized them as a World Heritage Site under the name " Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos ".

The forest fires in 2019 in Brazil, Bolivia and the Amazon rainforest region Chiquitania was also affected.

Today about twenty different indigenous groups still live in this region.
