The railway station Gmunden is the largest station in the Upper Austrian town of Gmunden . It is an important station of the Salzkammergut Railway and the starting point for the Gmunden tram and several urban and regional bus routes. Other train stations in Gmunden are the Gmunden Engelhof train station and the Gmundner Seebahnhof . Between 1944 and March 23, 1946, the station was officially known as Gmunden Hauptbahnhof . This term is still used by the population today.
history
With the construction of the Salzkammergut Railway, the city of Gmunden received another train station. In order to determine the ideal location, a special commission of experts was set up in 1875 to ensure that the railway line was not too close to the city, but also not too far away. The chosen location was ultimately too far from the city center. The result was constant complaints from the citizens of Gmunden and the tourists in the following years. The new station was opened on October 23, 1877. When the Salzkammergutbahn went into operation, the Lambach – Gmunden local railway lost its importance for salt transport. In order to overcome the distance to the city center, a local railway, today's Gmundner Tram, was built in 1894. At that time the station was still called Rudolfsbahnhof , the name change to Gmunden station was not made until later. At that time the tracks and buildings were located in the area of the Altmünster community , only in later years this area was awarded to the city of Gmunden.
In the course of the electrification of the Salzkammergut Railway, electrical operation began in Gmunden station in 1924. In 1988 passenger traffic on the Lambach – Gmunden line was discontinued, which is why only the Gmunden station has been served by ÖBB passenger trains since then. During the Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition in 2008 , the station was one of the fixed stops for the special trains hauled by steam locomotives.
Station and operation
The station has a 160-meter-long central platform with a level crossing, as well as another central platform where the tram stops. In addition to the main tracks , which are regularly used for train crossings , the station also has several side tracks . Close proximity to the railway tracks is the Gmunden cement plant, which have a rail connection and its own industrial railway has. For this reason, the sidings are mostly occupied by stone trains that are transported from the Ebensee quarry to the cement works. Despite the rather small size of the track system, there were two signal boxes for operating the switches and barriers; Since 2015 the station (together with the neighboring Aurachkirchen station) has been remote-controlled and unoccupied. In addition to the CityShuttle push-pull trains, electric multiple units of the 4024 , 4744 and 4746 series have also been used in passenger train services since 2008 . A class 1063 or 1163 locomotive is always used for the shunting work in the station area .
Connectivity
The Gmunden tram ensures the connection to the city center, its double-track departure point with central platform has been located directly in the station hall since 2015. It is at the other end of the track since 2018 with the Traunseebahn to Vorchdorf linked .
In addition, several Postbus lines stop in the immediate vicinity of the train station.

Station renovation
As part of the infrastructure stimulus package, it was decided to convert the ÖBB train station in Gmunden by 30 million euros. The start of construction was planned for 2011, but was not completed until July 2014. The narrow earth platforms will be removed and a central platform will be built, 160 meters long, 60 meters of which are covered, but there will be no underpass, so that the tracks will still have to be used. Furthermore, the station forecourt will be rebuilt, the Park & Ride facility will be expanded and a roofed Bike & Ride facility will be built, and a level crossing in the station area will be replaced by an underpass. The route of the Gmunden tram will be moved to the station side and a stop with barrier-free access to the new waiting area in the station will be built. The Pinsdorf and Aurachkirchen stops will also be rebuilt. On the approximately ten kilometer long section between Altmünster and Aurachkirchen, seven of the ten existing level crossings will be abandoned and replaced by underpasses and overpasses. Around 45 million euros are being invested in the reconstruction of the stations, including the railway crossings to be adapted. According to ÖBB, the construction work should be completed in 2016.
