Chiranjeevi ( Telugu చిరంజీవి ; born August 22, 1955 in Narasapuram , Andhra Pradesh ) is an Indian actor and producer of Telugu films . He is also active as a politician, including a member of the Indian National Congress .

Life

Chiranjeevi was born K. Shivashankara Varaprasad in the Taluk Narasapuram in West Godavari District . He studied at the Madras Film Institute and was an amateur stage actor. As such, he made his first public appearance at the 1976 Republic Day celebrations in Andhra Pradesh. He made his acting debut in 1978 with the film Punadhirallu and in the same year had his first major success with Pranam Khareedu . In his early years he starred under the directors Bapu and K. Balachander . Chiranjeevi's rise to the megastar of Telugu cinema began in the early 1980s with the hugely successful villain role in Intilo Ramayya Vidhilo Krishnayya (1981) and even more so in A. Kodandarami Reddy's action thriller Khaidi (1983). In the 1980s and 1990s, he earned a reputation as a performer of violent macho roles. Contrary to his role cliché, K. Vishwanath cast him in the leading roles of his Dalit dramas Swayamkrushi (1987) and Apathbandhavudu (1992). Chiranjeevi has appeared in front of the camera alongside numerous actresses from the South Indian film industry, including with Vanisree in A. Kodandarami Reddy's Attaku Yamudu Ammayiki Mogudu (1989) and Sridevi in K. Raghavendra Rao's Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari (1990). With Pratibandh (1990) he made his debut in a Hindi film alongside Juhi Chawla . Due to sexually explicit dialogues and representations, the Chiranjeevi film Alluda Majaaka (1995) by director EVV Satyanarayana experienced a censorship debate that was fueled by Indian women's and student groups and, on the other hand, by Chiranjeevi fans threatening to self- immolate. The initially only moderately successful film developed into a box-office hit after its re-release with a few censorship cuts.

After numerous Filmfare Awards South and a National Film Award as producer of the K. Balachander film Rudraveena (1988), he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2006.

Chiranjeevi is the founder of the Prajarajyam party. From 2012 to 2014, Chiranjeevi was State Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism in the government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh .
