Chislehurst Caves is a former chalk and flint mine in Chislehurst , a London suburb in Kent . The total length of the mine workings is around 35 kilometers.

history

The mine was first mentioned in 1250 and operated with interruptions until 1830. Probably been here since prehistoric times mining on flint operated.

During the First World War the facility was used as an ammunition depot, during the Second World War it was used as an air raid shelter during the air raids on London in 1940 . They offered around 15,000 residents protection from bomb attacks and were equipped with electrical lighting, ventilation systems, filter systems, bunk beds, first aid stations and toilet facilities. Shortly after VE Day 1945, Chislehurst Caves closed.

In the 1960s, Chislehurst Caves was used as a concert hall. David Bowie , Status Quo , Jimi Hendrix , the Rolling Stones  and  Pink Floyd made guest appearances here.

Trivia

Chislehurst Caves has been used as a filming location, including Doctor Who , the BBC series Seven Natural Wonders , The Tribe, and a music video for the metal band Cradle of Filth .

Today, Chislehurst Caves is a tourist attraction as a show mine .
