The Chixoy dam ( Spanish Represa Chixoy ), also known as the Chixoy hydroelectric power station ( Spanish hidroeléctrica Chixoy ), is located in Guatemala in the Alta Verapaz department , a few kilometers south of the small town of San Cristóbal Verapaz . It dams the Río Chixoy .
The barrier structure consists of a stone embankment dam with a clay core and a volume of 3.2 million m³. The flood discharge is on the left side of the dam. It is designed for a flood of 3,880 m³ / s, which occurs once every 10,000 years. The height is 110 m (or 90) and the length of the top of the wall is 250 m. When the reservoir reaches its maximum destination , the reservoir will hold 460 million m³ of water. The dam was built from 1976 to 1983.
A 26 km long tunnel leads north from the barrier structure and leads the water to the machine house. It is divided into two sections, 8 and 18 km long, as the valley of the Río Chixoy has to be crossed. This is done through a 200 m long pressure pipe that crosses the valley on six pillars.
power plant
With an installed capacity of 300 MW, the Chixoy power plant is the largest hydropower plant in Guatemala. When the power plant was commissioned in November 1983, five machines, each with a maximum output of 60 MW, were connected to the grid. Both the Pelton turbines and the associated generators ( Mitsubishi ) were supplied by Sulzer Escher Wyss . The power plant's machine house is located 26 km north of the dam in Quixal.
The owner and operator of the power plant is Instituto Nacional de Electrificación / Empresa de Generación de Energía Eléctrica (INDE / EGEE).
Rio Negro massacre
The planned dam construction resulted in the resettlement of the local population. At that time, Guatemala was in a civil war . In the course of this, 400 people were murdered in 1982.
