Systematics
Order : Beetle (Coleoptera)
Subordination : Polyphaga
Family : Weevil (Curculionidae)
Subfamily : Entiminae
Genre : Chlorophanus
Type : Chlorophanus excisus
Scientific name
Chlorophanus excisus
( Fabricius , 1801)

Chlorophanus excisus is a beetle from the family of weevils and the subfamily Entiminae . Eleven species belongto the genus Chlorophanus in Europe, four of which also occur in Central Europe. Chlorophanus excisus penetrates from the east to Austria and Switzerland, but is absent in Germany. The most common type of the genus in Central Europe is Chlorophanus viridis .

The generic name Chlorophanus from ancient Greek χλωρός 'chlorós' 'green' and φαίνω 'phāīno' 'I appear' refers to the (partially) green appearance. The species name excisus ( Latin ) means 'cut out' and probably refers to the deep incision on the trunk.

Characteristics of the beetle

The seven to thirteen millimeter long beetle is densely covered on the upper side with predominantly bright green scales (Fig. 3), but appears matt green due to the hairiness.

The head is extended forward by a broad trunk. It has a longitudinal keel and is deeply triangular cut out at the front edge. The feelers are pivoted near the tip of the trunk. The first antennae is barely angled towards the scourge and is relatively short, about as long as the following three members of the scourge combined. The species is differentiated from the other Central European species of the genus in that the light yellow to brownish hairs on the top of the trunk and forehead are dense and relatively upright (Fig. 3), while in the remaining species they are sparser, more lying, and metallic in color are.

The pronotum is about as wide as the head at the front, much wider at the back, but much narrower than the elytra together (Fig. 1). The rear corners are not slightly drawn outwards, the rear corners are rather obtuse. On the lower side of the front edge of the pronotum there are long hair bristles that are reminiscent of whiskers (Fig. 5).

The elytra are elongated, their sides hardly rounded. Towards the rear they run out into a long, drawn-out point and gape slightly apart at this point. (Fig. 4) The wing-cover tip is long and the two wing-covers gape apart at the tip. Next to the suture of the wing cover , the scales are paler and sparser, which makes the beetle appear darkly streaked there (Fig. 3). Another faded, dark longitudinal stripe usually appears from the sloping shoulders (Fig. 1).

The sturdy legs end in four-part tarsi . The tarsi, like the antennae, are lightened to reddish yellow. All rails are strongly curved. The rail tips have a wreath of small bristles and come out on the inside in a strong hook (Fig. 2). In the female, this is not exceptionally large on the middle leg, unlike other species. The claws are not overgrown.

biology

The beetles appear near water in May and June. They were found on wicker and white poplar bushes. The development is unknown.

distribution

The species is widespread in southeastern Central Europe, Eastern and Southern Europe as well as in Western Asia. Found reports are from Switzerland , Austria , the Czech Republic and Slovakia , Hungary , Moldova , Belarus , the Ukraine and Greece . Another source lists Turkey .
