Tschoir ( Mongolian Чойр ) is a city in Mongolia , 250 km southeast of the capital Ulaanbaatar , in the central- eastern part of the country. The city is the administrative center of the Gobi-Sümber-Aimag .

Tschoir consists of Sümber (the actual center), Chonchor (a district where the Soviets used to live) and the yurt district.

In 2002 Tschoir had 7,588 inhabitants (with the rural population 9,207), in 1979 there were only 4,500. In 2008 there were 9720. The whole of Gobi-Sümber has almost 13,350 inhabitants, consists of 3 sums (Sümber = Tschoir, Bayantal and Schiweegobi) and 6 bags. The area of ​​Gobi-Sümber extends over 5,054 km². Tschoir is located in the Tschoirtal , a strip of land about 150 km long and 10-20 km wide. It is about 500 m below the surrounding area, at an altitude of 1230 to 1269 m. Gobi-Sümber itself is at an altitude of 1000 to 1200 m.

Infrastructure

Tschoir is located on the Trans-Mongolian railway line and on the road connection from Ulaanbaatar to China. Several trains run in both directions every day. Buses run to Ulaanbaatar at least once a day, but also multiple shared taxis depending on demand. Tschoir has electricity and water connections. In summer there is hot water only on weekends; Every now and then there are power and water failures, but these are mostly announced and have to do with repair work in the summer.

climate

The region is an extension of the Gobi Desert with an extremely continental climate, very dry, even if it rains more here than in the rest of the Gobi. The average is 200–250 mm. In summer it is often hot, but winter is not as hard as in other parts of the country (in October / November it is only slightly below 0 degrees). Nevertheless, the maximum is 37 ° C in summer and -37 ° C in winter. It is often windy ("choir wind"), especially in summer, and then there are sandstorms and / or thunderstorms.

history

Tschoir was a Soviet military base. Between 1989 and 1992 the Soviets left Tschoir. In Bayantal (formerly also Lun Bag), approx. 25 km north of Tschoir, is the longest runway in all of Mongolia. The former base is now under the control of the Mongolian army. It is not actively operated, but is still not open to the public.

Attractions

A statue in honor of the first Mongolian cosmonaut Dschügderdemidiin Gürragaa stands on the station forecourt of Tschoir . The largest surviving Russian statue in Mongolia is located near Chonchor. The Tschoir museum is also located in Chonchor, in the administration building.

The Tschoirberg, the Sansarberg and the Sumberberg are located near Tschoir. At Tschoirberg there used to be a monastery with 1000 lamas. Several Buddhist sites and monuments are still there today.

economy

There has been an industrial and technology park in Tschoir since 1994. Tschoir has a prison with about 460 inmates. Gobi-Sümber is rich in natural resources such as lignite, oil, tin, clay and minerals, which are exploited in several large mines.
